DOE to recommend policy direction for next admin

MANILA, May 10 (PNA) — The Department of Energy targets to complete its recommendation for the policy direction of the next administration.

In a press conference Tuesday, DOE secretary Zenaida Monsada said the energy family wants the incoming officials "to continue the programs of retail competition and open access, competitive selection process, the wholesale electricity spot market in Mindanao, renewable portfolio standards and green energy option."

She further disclosed the department and its attached agencies eyes to design the Power Development Plan (PDP) by regions.

Aside from the PDP, the secretary cited the department is completing the distribution development plan, grid development plan, and transmission development plan.

Monsada also said the department also wants to provide a recommendation for a balanced fuel mix. It will be composed of 30 percent coal, 30 percent natural gas and 30 percent renewable energy, while the remaining will be supplied by other fuels such as oil and nuclear.

For a potential nuclear recommendation, the secretary said the department will likely issue a statement recognizing it as an option.

She pointed out the department also seeks to strengthen the implementation of retail rules to eliminate the sale of bottled fuel and illegal refilling liquefied petroleum gas.

Monsada further bared the department will recommend policies for energy efficiency, which includes energy labeling for industries and transportation.

The secretary also said the potential extension of service contract 38 — Malampaya to Shell Philippines Exploration will likely be decided by the next administration. (PNA)
