MANILA, Feb. 15 (PNA) — The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) on Monday said that rice farmers and seed growers in Central Luzon and Pangasinan would soon have better access to high-quality seeds with the establishment of a new rice seed processing facility at the agency’s headquarters in the Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija.

PhilRice Executive Director Dr. Calixto M. Protacio said that the facility would house advanced equipment that could process up to two tons of seeds per day.

The USD 2-million rice seed processing facility was launched last Jan. 26 and is funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). It is expected to be completed in 2017.

“The project’s objective is to increase the use of high-quality seeds of our farmers in Region III and Pangasinan. The adoption of high-quality seeds can contribute to 5-10 percent increase in yield,” the Agriculture official said.

With the facility, PhilRice and KOICA also hope to modernize the production and improve the quality of rice seeds.

Protacio said that the state-of-the-art facility would increase the efficiency of processing and certification of rice seeds by reducing the time of processing and seed testing.

“Seeds that will be processed in the new facility would have high seedling vigor, meaning, they have a good survival rate and root anchorage. This will lead to a higher yield advantage among our farmers and eventually help the country increase rice productivity,” he said. (PNA)
