WASHINGTON, Dec. 22 — Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company has received an additional USD 1.171 billion contract to maintain the planned production schedule for 80 F-35A combat aircraft, the US Department of Defense announced.

More than half the work will be performed at the company’s main facility in Fort Worth, Texas and the rest at different locations around the world, the announcement said.

“[The aircraft are] for the US Air Force; six for… Norway; four for… Turkey; eight for… the Netherlands; eight for… Australia; ten for…Israel; six for… Japan; and ten for… South Korea,” the announcement stated on Monday.

The F-35 program has attracted widespread criticism for its cost overruns and allegedly being unable to totally fulfil the capabilities claimed for it in all its various roles. (PNA/Sputnik)
