Boy drowns, cousin hospitalized in Pangasinan beach tragedy

DAGUPAN CITY, Dec. 20 — One of two children who were missing after being carried away by high waves while swimming in Barangay Nibaliw West in San Fabian town at past noon of Saturday died.

His cousin and companion miraculously survived the incident and is now in stable condition at Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) in Dagupan City.

The fatality was identified as Karl Aron Eleazar, 12, of Barangay Lebueg, Laoac town. His cousin, identified in a police report as Shane Abegail Mapalo, 10, is now in stable condition at R1MC.

Investigation disclosed that Eleazar, Mapalo and their other cousins were swimming when the duo were carried away in the deeper portion of the sea by high waves until they were lost from sight.

Joint elements of the Water Search and Rescue (WASAR) team of San Fabian Police Station and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) were immediately mobilized to conduct search and rescue operation.

Both children were found by rescuers at about 1 p.m. of the same day. They were rushed to the Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan City for medical treatment.

However, Eleazar was declared dead on arrival (DOA) by the attending physician, while Mapalo survived. (PNA)
