MANILA, Oct. 27 — November 27 this year is the deadline for submitting entries to the Gawad Julian Cruz Balmaceda competition of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) for the best thesis/dissertation written in Filipino, the country's national language.

"We invite the public to join this competition," KWF translation chief Dr. Benjamin Mendillo said Tuesday (Oct. 27) at a forum in Metro Manila.

He noted a PHP100,000 prize and plaque of recognition await the competition's winner.

"There's also the opportunity for the winning entry to bepublished," he said.

The award bears the name of the late Julian Cruz Balmaceda, one of the country's leading Filipino language scholars.

KWF, the government's language authority, came up with the award to honor Balmaceda as well as promote use and publication of original works written in Filipino.

KWF also promotes works written in other Philippine languages.

According to KWF, the competition is open to everyone except the agency's employees and kin.

Entries for the competition must be unpublished and not mere translations of foreign work.

Such entries must be on either the natural and social sciences, mathematics or related fields.

Parties interested in submitting entries can contact KWF regarding other details of the competition.

KWF is granting the award every Jan. 28 which is Balmaceda's birthday.

2016 marks Balmaceda's 121st birth anniversary.

Balmaceda died in 1947. (PNA)
