Pacman-Powervit Aguilas plays Thai squad in Davao City

DAVAO CITY, Oct. 19 — The Pacman-Powervit Pilipinas Aguilas will see action on October 29 against Thailand’s Mono Vampire basketball club in Davao City’s University of Southeastern Philippines gymnasium, Bo. Obrero, this city.

ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) spokesman Randy Caluag said the Pilipinas Aguilas, which will be coached by former PBA superstar Zaldy Realubit, will also compete against the best teams of Southeast Asia.

“The Aguilas will be composed of former PBA veterans, emerging basketball superstars and a couple of power imports,” he said.

Meanwhile, Caluag said the Philippines will now be represented by a basketball team formed by sports icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Powervit multivitamins in this year’s season of the ABL.

ABL is a men’s professional basketball league in Asia composed of teams from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore and the Philippines.

Two-time PBA most valuable player Willie Miller, Charles Mammie and Arizona Reed would form the core of the team.

Former Philippine teams that participated in the league are the now defunct AirAsia Philippine Patriots and San Miguel Beermen, both of which became champions.

Founded by AirAsia owner Tony Fernandez, the ABL is now on its sixth season with the inaugural games to be held on October 28 in Thailand with a match between defending champion Hi-Tech Bangkok City and Singapore Slingers.

The ABL teams will have a total of 10 home games and 10 away games, wherein they will be visiting the home courts of other competitors in their respective countries.
