MANILA, March 17 (PNA) — Sulu Rep. Tupay Loong on Tuesday appealed to the leadership of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Bangsamoro people not to lose trust in the government particularly to President Benigno Aquino III.

“Of course, with due respect to some members of the Congress and the Senate, some of them are against the enactment of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) because of the unfortunate Mamasapano incident,” Loong, chairman of the House committee on Muslim Affairs, said.

He, however, said that about 95 percent of the members of the House of Representatives are “in support on the passage of BBL within the framework of the Philippine Constitution.”

The former Muslim rebel turned politician said that he was among the invited guests in Malacanang on BBL issue last February 23 and he asked a straight forward question to President Aquino what was the stand of the government. The President immediately responded positively that BBL should push through saying that this is his commitment to the Filipino people to attain long lasting peace in Mindanao.

Loong also appealed to his colleagues in the legislature not to take this matter lightly and instead should take this seriously to protect the image of the government to the international community.

“It is worthy to note that when the Comprehensive Bangsamoro Agreement was signed between the National government and the MILF, the United Nations as well as members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) expressed their commitment to support the peace process.

Other countries and multilateral agencies that expressed their support include Singapore, Cambodia, Canada, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America, Japan, Brunei, Norway, Turkey, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, European Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The former commander of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) emphasized that with the concern of the international community for Filipinos to have peace, it should be of the Filipinos to be concerned to find peace in Mindanao and the whole country. (PNA)
