LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 20 (PNA) — Hundreds of members of the Filipino-Chinese community headed by Antonio Tan, Liberty Commercial Center (LCC) president and Fiesta Tsinoy chair, gathered at the Albay Astrodome here in celebration of the Chinese New Year on Thursday.

Chinese New Year is considered as one of the most important festivals by the local Chinese community here.

It does follow a fixed date in the Gregorian Calendar.

The celebration of the Chinese New Year here started in 2004 and it was officially included among the city’s yearly festivals.

It was jointly organized by the local Filipino-Chinese community, the City Government of Legazpi, Provincial Government of Albay and the Department of Tourism (DOT) Bicol Regional Office.

The event started with a dragon and lion dance shown in front of the Legazpi Long Se and Fraternal Association building and ended with colorful activities and fire display in front of the Albay Astrodome.

Legazpi City Mayor Noel E. Rosal said that for this year’s celebration, the city administration was assigned to prepare the wooden sheep that symbolizes unity or the time for all the people to be together.

Rosal revealed that this kind of celebration is part of promoting the culture and dignity of the Chinese community in this city.

As part of the tradition, most of the community members usually clean their homes, prepare lucky money in red envelop, serve sweet foods and display different kinds of fruits on a table which they believe would give more prosperity, close family ties and better fortune.

The Filipino-Chinese community is considered as one of the engines of economic growth and an important backbone of the city administration, considering the fact that most of the members of this group have their own big business establishments operating in the commercial areas that contribute so much to city’s local revenue collections, the city mayor pointed out.

He also described this group as the strong partner of the City Government of Legazpi in addressing the unemployment rate and poverty incidence because most of their employees and workers came from the locality.

Tan said Fiesta Tsinoy is an annual celebration of culture and tradition that would help in promoting the continuing unity of Filipino and Chinese towards the continuous path of progress and development of this city.

The business leader commended the Provincial Government of Albay as well as the City Government of Legazpi and the DOT for the strong support to this very important event of the Filipino-Chinese community.

He said the Filipino-Chinese will work hand in hand for putting more establishments in Legazpi to meet the shopping needs of the constituents and to give more employment opportunities to job seekers. (PNA)
