BAGUIO CITY, Jan. 21 -– About 1.78 hectares of vegetable plantation in Paoay, Atok, Benguet was affected by the occurrence of frost locally known as "andap" as recorded from December 2014 until January 8, 2015.

Municipal Agriculturist Cherry Sano, in an interview on Wednesday, January 21, clarified there are 33 affected farmers with an area of 10.74 hectares but only 1.78 hectares are damaged with a total value of Php115,118.

Affected by the frost were cabbage, potato, carrots and some cut flowers in their harvestable stage.

“Andap” was first reported on December 29 and 30 in Paoay with temperature recorded at 12.77°C and 12.66°C, respectively.

Although “andap” is believed to occur at 9°C or below, Sano explained that frost does not rely on temperature alone.

“There were days when our temperature in the municipality drops to 9°C but there is no frost incidence but there are days when it is 11°C and 'andap' occurs," she said.

"Other factors including humidity, wind, water supply, and overcast sky affect frost formation on the ground,” she added.

Sano explained that frost is a natural occurrence in Benguet and has been happening in the province particularly from December to February when very cold weather is experienced.

The farmers have a program for their production and know the timing of harvesting such that it does not fall during the coldest months.

The Department of Agriculture has been introducing interventions to ensure production and availability of supply.

Among these are the provision of mini-dam, water pumps, drums, hose and power sprayers, and seeds to farmers.

Frost incidents are also reported in Madaymen, Kibungan and Babadak, Kabayan both in Benguet and in Mount Data in Bauko, Mountain Province. (PNA)
