BAGUIO CITY, Jan. 17 — Baguio City councilor Elmer Datuin confirmed that the refurbished Baguio Athletic Bowl will be ready for the two big events in February.

Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan on Tuesday got the commitment of project contractor R.U. Aquino Development and Construction Corp. for the sports facility’s availability for the opening of the Baguio Flower Festival on Feb. 1 and of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) meet on Feb. 7.

In an interview on Saturday, Datuin said a coordination meeting was attended by councilors Peter Fianza, Datuin, chairman of the Council Committee on Tourism and acting City Building Officer Johnny Degay and contractor Romy Aquino where the latter assured the mayor that by Jan. 31, all the works at the Athletic Bowl will be completed including the bleachers, stage and the compacted grounds with the layout of the oval.

However, the upgrading of the dirt tracks into rubber tartan tracks will have to wait as the importation process for the material will take time and will not be completed even in time for the CARAA meet on Feb. 7 to 11.

Datuin said the city was working out the purchase of the material from Germany with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

The regional sports event is expected to draw more than 5,000 athletes and delegates from the five provinces and two cities of region.

Preparations are on track for the athletic meet with the Baguio City Council expected to approve the Php 2.5 million budget for the hosting.

The upgrading started with an initial funding of Php 14 million from the department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to repair the bleachers and grandstand.

The city allocated Php 60 million to convert the dirt running oval into a tartan track.(PNA)
