CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Jan. 8 -– Devotees of the “Black Nazarene” have started their vigil Thursday at the sprawling Don Gregorio Pelaez sports complex here, organizers said.

The Hijos De Cagayan, the organizers of the Black Nazarene procession, said that the vigil is a prelude to the procession that would start early morning Friday.

Toto Salcedo, of the Hijos De Cagayan, said the vigil is intended for those who wish to forego the five-kilometer procession on Friday.

He said that the Hijos have decided to hold the vigil to allow the devotees from other places to have a chance to be with the Black Nazarene.

“Every year, the devotees from other places flock to Cagayan De Oro City to join the procession. The devotees are growing in number every year,” Salcedo said.

He said that the organizers are expecting more than 30,000 people to join the procession on Friday, the Feast of the Black Nazarene here.

A police officer said that about 1,000 policemen would be deployed on Friday to secure the participants of the procession. (PNA)
