COTABATO CITY, Jan 3 — Jail guards of the Maguindanao provincial jail on Friday foiled an attempt by a high risk inmate from bolting the jail facility, officials said.

Armando Baguamama, provincial jail warden, said Datukan Sama, 49, alias 'Commander Lastikman,' tried but failed to escape from his detention cell at the Maguindanao Maguindanao provincial jail at PC Hill, Cotabato City.

Baguamama said the escape plot was foiled when jail guards conducted a routine inspection early Friday morning.

The cell's iron grill where Samad was detained along with 28 others have hack saw marks, an indication there was a plot to bolt jail.

He said a motorbike was also found suspiciously abandoned a few meters away.

"May be that motor was intended as Datukan's get away vehicle," he said in the vernacular.

Jail guards also recovered a plastic heat-sealed sachet with suspected shabu inside Samad's cell, a steel saw and bladed weapons.

Samad was facing multiple murder and frustrated multiple murder charges, kidnapping and carnapping in North Cotabato and Maguindanao courts.

He was arrested in Pikit, North Cotabato and detained at the Kidapawan City jail. His colleagues, numbering about 50, launched a daring rescue attempt by attacking the Kidapawan City jail at the back of the city hall, leaving at least three persons dead, including firemen who responded to the scene.

He was moved to Midsayap, North Cotabato and later transferred to Maguindanao provincial jail where he escaped in 2013.

But on July 2013, he was re-arrested in Tacurong City during a police checkpoint and later turned over to Maguindanao jail May 2, 2014.

The Maguindanao provincial jail, also known as House of Correction, is located at a military reservation area and beside residential homes in PC Hill, Barangay Rosary Heights 1, Cotabato City. (PNA)
