CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Oct. 30 (PNA) — Local health officials have agreed to hold an “Ebola” summit in this seaport capital of 800,000 people in Northern Mindanao, a city official said Thursday.

City Councilor Dante Pajo, chair of the city council committee on health, said that the local health officials agreed on the holding of “Ebola” summit here during a committee meeting last week.

Dr. Jocelyn Torrecampo, of the Department of Health, said that President Benigno Aguino, III, has signed an executive order for the creation of an inter-agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID).

She said that the guidelines for the creation of the EID were approved and preparations are being put in place which will include training of health providers and the conduct of an information drive.

The inter-agency task force, however, have yet to agree on the exact date of the scheduled Ebola Summit here.

Torrecampo said that there is the need for orientation, training and basic information campaign about the deadly disease.

“There is a real need for us to understand what Ebola is,” Pajo said.

He said the city can assist the DOH in preparing for the Ebola Summit, which should be held at the soonest possible time.

“There should be a sense of urgency, the threat is real,”stressed Dr. Ramon Nery, executive officer of the J.R. Borja General Hospital BGH.

Nery said that Ebola is transmitted through close contact. He said preventive measures should be instituted in entry points to prevent the entry of the virus.

Health officials said that the government already had experience in the handling Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and MERS-CoV, and other cases and the holding of the Ebola Summit in the city is one that needs urgency, too.

The (EID) is composed of the DOH as the lead agency, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Department of Tourism (DOT), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Bureau of Quarantine. (PNA)
