NNC to confer highest nutrition award to Southern Leyte’s Maasin City

PALO, Leyte, Sept. 18 — The National Nutrition Council (NNC) will confer next month the Nutrition Honor Award (NHA) to Maasin City, the second local government unit in Eastern Visayas to receive the highest recognition for nutrition programs implementation.

NNC regional nutrition program coordinator Catalino Dotollo said the technical committee in their central office has approved the granting of NHA to the Southern Leyte capital after it passed all criteria during an evaluation early this year.

“The malnutrition rate has been very low in the last five years. Their various initiatives are simple yet those are very effective and efficient as far as addressing malnutrition is concerned,” Dotollo said.

The awarding will take place on October 21, 2014 either in Malacañang or at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila with President Benigno S. C. Aquino III as the guest of honor.

In 2013, Maasin, a city with a population of more than 85,000 posted the lowest malnutrition rate among cities in the region at 4.15 percent. The local government targets a two-percent prevalence.

The prevalence is significantly low than the figures in Tacloban in Leyte (6.66 percent), Calbayog in Samar (11.60 percent), Borongan in Eastern Samar (11.88 percent), Ormoc in Leyte (13.19 percent), Baybay in Leyte (13.91 percent) and Catbalogan in Samar (17.77 percent).

In 2011, the island town of Limasawa also in Southern Leyte won the Nutrition Honor Award, the first LGU in Eastern Visayas to earn the recognition.

From 2012 to 2013, Maasin City has maintained being Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) and vied for this year’s highest nutrition award.

In the past three years, the city government allots a minimum of P1 million for nutrition programs, considered as one of the priority services of the local government.

NHA awardees will get a cash prize of P1 million and a trophy to be presented during the 2014 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony next month. (PNA)
