TACLOBAN CITY, Sept 8 — The Department of Health has already downloaded funds for provinces in Eastern Visayas that can be used for campaign programs against filariasis and other tropical diseases after super typhoon "Yolanda" battered the region November last year.

Analiza L. Balila, National Filariasis Elimination Program manager in Eastern Visayas, said that the post-Yolanda fund was an additional grant from the department since the region has been declared as the first filariasis-free region in the country.

Except for north Leyte, DOH has already started the release of funds for provinces of Biliran, Southern Leyte, Northern Samar, Western Samar and Eastern Samar.

The fund for north Leyte is yet to be released as the memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the DOH and the provincial government is yet to be returned to the department.

Southern Leyte was declared as filariasis-free in 2008 followed by Biliran in 2010. Eastern Samar attained similar status in 2012 while North Leyte and Western Samar were named filariasis-free in 2013.

Lymphatic filariasis is caused by a parasite known as filariae that is transmitted by mosquitoes. Its manifestations can be seen 10 years after the infection to include among others the swelling of limbs and genital organs.

It used to be endemic in Eastern Visayas in 1998. (PNA)
