MANILA, Jan. 16 — The National Food Authority (NFA) has activated its memorandum of agreements (MOA) with local government units (LGUs) for the immediate distribution of rice stocks in areas affected by the continuous rains in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

The areas of Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, and General Santos in Mindanao and Tacloban City in Visayas remain submerged in floodwaters due to continuous rains caused by a low pressure area (LPA) affecting the region.

A total of 122 bags were already released to Compostela Valley, one of the hardest hit areas.

A Philippine Navy barge is ready to transfer 1,000 bags to augment NFA’s stocks in the municipalities of Baganga and Cateel at Davao Oriental.

The NFA has also issued 100 bags of rice for the local government of Baganga for their immediate distribution to families in evacuation centers.

Barangay Lagao in General Santos was issued 63 bags for relief operations in affected areas.

In Davao del Norte, the floods have affected 5,769 persons of 1,208 family in 34 barangays who are now temporarily sheltered in 13 evacuation centers.

Around 671 hectares of land planted to palay were partially damaged by flood costing P11.3 million, according to the food agency. (PNA)
