Mison to illegal aliens: legalize your stay

MANILA, Jan. 10 — Overstaying foreign nationals with fake immigration stamps were advised to voluntarily surrender and personally process their documents.

Commissioner Siegfred Mison said those who have spurious documents should report to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) main office in Manila to avoid inconvenience.

He explained that as a general rule foreigners with fake immigration stamps and fake emigration clearance certificate (ECC) shall be arrested, charged for deportation, detained, and deported.

However, he noted that if an alien voluntarily surrenders, he/she will not be detained. Instead, he will be investigated and charged for deportation.

"The immigration bureau is taking a more humane approach to foreigners staying in the country illegally. Those who voluntarily surrender will not face detention. That is our commitment to them,” Mison added.

But, the BI chief explained that certain deportation cases can be dismissed if an alien can substantiate reasons that he has no intention to violate any Philippine and immigration laws and policies. (PNA)
