Death toll in Lanao del Sur clan war rises to 10

CAMP SK PENDATUN, Maguindanao, July 22 — The clan war involving huge families in Bayang, Lanao del Sur has already resulted in the death of 10 persons, police said Monday.

Senior Supt. Nixon Mucsan, Lanao del Sur police director, said the situation has been normalized after police, military and Muslim religious leaders intervened Sunday.

According to Mucsan, four other members of the Kapal and Macugar clans were wounded and six houses in Barangay Linao were torched during the two-day sporadic firefight that started on Saturday morning.

Mucsan said politics and crimes triggered the rido between families belonging to Macugar and Kapal families.

He said it has political color when one of the Macugars lost in the May 2013 local elections and felt he was cheated by his rival who belonged to the Kapal clan.

Earlier, Chief Supt. Noel Delos Reyes, police director in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, has ordered the deployment of police public safety battalion to serve as peacekeepers and stand in between the warring clans.

Mucsan said efforts are underway for a peaceful settlement of the Macugar-Kapal clan war through the PNP and the Muslim religious leaders.

He could not say why the Macugar and Kapal are armed to the teeth. (PNA)
