MANILA, July 22 — With President Benigno S. Aquino III's 4th State-of-the-Nation-Address (SONA) about to start in a few hours, the Manila Police District (MPD) and the Presidential Security Group (PSG) have sealed off Mendiola Bridge near Malacañang to traffic early Monday morning.

This is part of the efforts to forestall militant groups from conducting protest actions in the vicinity.

The MPD and the PSG received reinforcements from police in Cagayan Valley and the Northern Police District.

Mendiola Bridge has been a venue of protest actions by various groups airing their grievances.

Aquino is to deliver his SONA before a joint session of Congress at the Batasan Complex in Quezon City Monday afternoon.

Several militant groups had scheduled protest actions timed for the SONA, but most of these actions are at Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.

Traffic at Commonwealth Avenue had been heavy Monday due to tight security measures in time for Aquino's SONA before a joint session of Congress in the afternoon.

Police and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority had barricaded parts of the road earlier Mondayth , partly to prevent protesters from getting near the Batasan Complex.

However, protesters managed to get past the first layer of barricades and set up makeshift stages along parts of Commonwealth Avenue. (PNA)
