MANILA, May 31 (PNA) — A New People's Army (NPA) rebel was killed while another, a minor, was wounded following a series of encounters with government forces in Laak town, Compostela Valley Province Friday.

The first encounter happened around 8:40am in Sitio Kugon, Barangay Lunganapan in Laak when concerned civilians informed the troopers manning the San Antonio Patrol Base about the presence of armed men conducting roadblock.

The latter immediately responded to the scene and engaged the NPAs in a 20 minute firefight which resulted in the death of one rebel fighter.

Troops were able to recover 40 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition and an M-60 machine gun, a backpack and 50 meters electrical wire for a landmine.

The second encounter occurred at 1:40pm when troops of 60th Infantry Battalion pursued the withdrawing NPA at the vicinity of Sitio Buayahon, Barangay San Antonio, Laak.

The wounded minor, confirmed to be an NPA fighter, was captured carrying an AK-47 automatic rifle.

Reports revealed that the rescued minor sustained head injury during his escape when HE rolled down the rugged terrain.

He was given immediate first aid treatment by the soldiers.

Lt. Col. Llewellyn Binasoy, 60th Infantry Battalion commander said:“We will ensure that all NPA roadblocks will be prevented as possible. This has caused fear to the civilians and might result to further abductions. Our troops in the area are continually implementing the peace and development outreach program in coordination with the stakeholders in order to pave way for a just and lasting peace and sustainable development.(PNA)
