CEBU CITY, May 29 — The Cebu Provincial board has passed a resolution asking the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to assist Cebuanos in Taiwan.

The resolution said the PB found it “imperative to request the Department of Foreign Affairs to assist Cebuanos in Taiwan who could be subjects of violence following the shooting to death of a Taiwanese fisherman.”

It said that on May 9, a Taiwanese fisherman was shot to death by the Philippine Coast Guard after his vessel tried to bump the authorities’ boat.

”After the said incident, several Filipinos were injured, attacked and beaten up by Taiwanese gang members,” it added.

In support of the request, the resolution cited Section 468 (a) and (1) of the Local Government Code, or Republic Act 7160, which empowers the Provincial Board to maintain peace and order by enacting measures that will prevent and suppress lawlessness.

The resolution also cited Section 16 of the Code, which tasks the local government unit to promote the health and safety of its inhabitants.

The resolution was passed without question or legislators asking for clarification. (PNA)
