MANILA, May 8 – A former senator who resigned almost two years ago amid allegations he benefited in a massive poll fraud in 2007 topped a mock election conducted by the Senate employees on Wednesday.

Juan Miguel Zubiri, running under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) senatorial ticket, garnered the highest votes of 645 out of the 845 Senate employees who participated in the mock poll for top 12 senators.

Zubiri even bested fellow UNA’s senatorial bet Jack Enrile, son of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile who, despite controversy on alleged uneven allocation of funds to four senators last December, drew support from Senate employees.

The young Enrile received 615 votes in second place followed by another UNA reelectionist Senator Gregorio Honasan II who gained 507 votes.

Two former senators Ramon ‘Jun’ Magsaysay Jr. of Team PNoy and Richard Gordon of UNA placed fourth and fifth with 507 and 409 votes, respectively.

Former Puerto Princessa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn also entered the top 12 with 346 votes in sixth spot followed by Senator Edgardo Angara’s son Sonny Angara who got 290 votes.

Team PNoy reelectionist Loren Legarda, a consistent No. 1 in the pre-election surveys, garnered 231 votes only in eight spot while Team PNoy’s Grace Poe was in the ninth place with 230 votes.

Aquilino ‘Koko’ Pimentel III, who filed election protest against Zubiri in the 2007 elections, managed to gather 225 votes only while independent candidate Teddy Casino and UNA’s JV Ejercito garnered 220 and 209 votes, respectively, to complete the top 12 senators in the mock election.

Other surveys’ frontrunners Alan Cayetano, Francis Escudero, Nancy Binay and Cynthia Villar of Team PNoy failed to make it in the Senate employees’ top 12 choice.

Antonio Trillanes IV, who once engaged Senate President Enrile in a word war on issue of West Philippine Sea, got 107 votes only. (PNA)
