MANILA, May 1 — Unemployed workers were given a chance of finding a job as the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) conducted job fairs on selected SM malls on Wednesday.

“This is my first time to join a job fair and I am hoping to get any job that fits my qualification,” said Grace Melchor, nursing graduate from Metropolitan College of Nursing.

Melchor added that she went to SM San Lazaro for the job fair, she made sure that her resume was well prepared and she was dressed properly for the event.

Paul Alexis Doctolero, a student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines-San Juan and also a first-timer in job fairs, said that he is looking for a part-time career in the job fair in SM Sta. Mesa to support his studies and her mother’s medication.

Another applicant, Camae Andaya remained positive that she can be hired in one of the companies in the job fair in SM Sta. Mesa, despite being rejected six times prior to the event.

“Actually I’ve been here before 7 a.m. Sana matanggap ako para na din sa experience at makatulong na din sa gastusin sa bahay,” Jeffrick Albento said sharing his experience in SM North Edsa.

DOLE and PESO joined forces in conducting job fairs to help alleviate the seven percent increase of unemployed workers in the country.

Moreover, the event is also in line with the celebration of the 111th Labor Day celebration, with the theme “Manggagawang Pilipino: Handa sa Hamon ng Makabagong Panahon.”

A total of 619 local employers and 37 overseas licensed employment agencies took part in the event with about 171,000 local and overseas job vacancies available for job seekers.

Available jobs per industry include: cyber services, hotel and restaurant/tourism, health and wellness, wholesale and retail trade, construction, automotive, banking, insurance, logistics, finance, real estate, and others.

Applicants in the job fairs were mostly composed of fresh graduates hoping to be hired to the field in line to their course of expertise.

“Nakakatuwa na mas systematic ang job fair ngayon at nakakatuwa rin na makita na talagang interesado lahat ng applicants at nakikita mong nagsisikap,” Mandaluyong PESO Chief Emma Javier said. (PNA)
