Cebu City mayor say ambush of Masbate mayor's live-in partner in Cebu an ‘insult’

CEBU CITY, April 15 — Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said he considered it an insult to him and the police the ambush of a live-in partner of a mayor in Masbate province Monday morning in the city’s waterfront.

”I consider this an insult to me and to the police,” Rama said.

He urged the police to capture the gunmen.

Cristina Lauro, a live-in partner of Mayor Herminigildo M. Betonio III of Pio V, Corpus town in Masbate, was shot dead by motorcycle-riding gunmen near Cebu City pier area at around 5 a.m. Monday, minutes after arrival from Masbate.

Lauro was on board a taxi with Betonio's sister, Pio Corpuz councilor Leny Betonio Iser, when the suspects opened fire at their vehicle.

Taxi driver Gilbert Bernito said they stopped at a red light on the corner of V. Sotto and MacArthus blvd. when the motorcycle-riding gunmen came and opened fire at his cab at about 6:30 a.m.

He said drove the vehicle despite the stop signal to evade further gunfire.

He took the two to the Chong Hua Hospital, but Lauro died of a gunshot wound in the chest.

Iser is now in stable condition.

Senior Supt. Mariano Nautu-el, Cebu City police chief, said the ambush was well planned because they gunmen were aware of the victims’ travel from Masbate to Cebu.

He said the police are still pursuing leads on the identities and motives of the killers.

He said the killing could be political or personal.(PNA)
