MANILA, April 15 — Team PNoy senatorial candidate Benigno ‘Bam’ Aquino on Monday welcomed the latest Grant Thornton International Business Report listing Filipino businessmen as the second most optimistic in the world.

”The report speaks a lot about the confidence of Filipino businessmen on the country’s economy under the Aquino administration. It shows that the reforms being implemented by the President are bearing fruit,” the younger Aquino said.

The Thornton report released last week showed that around 90 percent of Filipino businessmen were optimistic about the growth of the economy in the next 12 months, a boost of 18 percentage points from the last quarter of 2012, and the highest recorded since 2011.

The Filipino business community was second only to Peru which registered an optimism balance of 98 percent.

Optimism in the Philippines was also much higher than the ASEAN average of 29 percent and the global average of 27 percent.

There were several factors that contributed to the optimism, according to Aquino.

‘Several positive forecasts for the country, culminating in the historic investment grade status given by Fitch, may have contributed to the new found confidence of the business community,” said the young Aquino, himself a social entrepreneur and a former Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum.

“So there is a good foundation for this surge in optimism among our business leaders,” added Aquino, whose social enterprise, Hapinoy, has been awarded around the world for its poverty alleviation program using innovations in micro-enterprise, micro-finance, and the Filipino staple, the sari-sari store.

“We at Team PNoy would certainly support the continuation of the economic reforms being espoused by President Aquino,” he said.

He said the recent developments show that the Philippine economy now shows a lot of promise.

”But we cannot be complacent as there is still a lot of work to be done. The Team PNoy slate will ensure that all of these reforms will flow down to the people, to give every Filipino family more opportunities for jobs, business support, and the chance to have a better life,” Aquino said. (PNA)
