MANILA, Dec. 15 — Holding of "Simbang Gabi" or dawn Masses in corridors and hallways of shopping malls are not allowed, the Archdiocese of Manila said on Saturday.

The archdiocese issued the reminder in view of the start of the traditional nine days of dawn Masses on Sunday.

“We do not allow Simbang Gabi to be celebrated in corridors and hallways of shopping malls where the celebration of the Holy Eucharist is needlessly exposed to shoppers that are indifferent to the celebration,” said part of the guideline posted in the Archdiocese of Manila’s website, www.rcam.org.

The guideline was first issued in 2010 by then Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales and reiterated by his successor, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle.

According to the guideline, the proper places to celebrate dawn Masses are the parochial churches and chapels which are duly recognized within the jurisdiction of the parishes.

However, the Archdiocese of Manila said "Simbang Gabi" may be celebrated in a mall or shopping center if there is a chapel in the establishment, where the Holy Eucharist is celebrated with frequency and duly approved by them.

Held from Dec. 16 to 24, Simbang Gabi culminates in the "Misa de Gallo," the Mass held on Christmas eve. (PNA)
