MANILA, Dec. 13 — Senator Pia Cayetano, together with Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano and officials from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Thursday led the launching of the “Rock It Science Bus”, a modern and interactive science laboratory on wheels for the benefit of elementary and high school students of the city.

During the innovative project inaugurated at the Sen. Renato Companero Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School in Barangay Ususan, Taguig, Senator Cayetano said the project will reach out to public school students, not only in Metro Manila, but also in the provinces.

She said that of the country's 45,977 public elementary and high schools , only 5,821 or 13 percent have science laboratories as of school year 2011-2013.

"Most of our government-run schools are underequipped when it comes to science education. This means that many public school students do not get to experience and discover the fun of learning from hands-on science experiments in a real laboratory set-up," Cayetano said.

"The huge discrepancy reminds us of the need to raise the level of science and technology education in our public school system. But we cannot address the shortage overnight since it will involve huge investments in equipment, modules and training. We need to be creative in our approach," she added, in reference to the science bus.

Cayetano said "The Rock It Science Bus" team is a composed of a science teacher, a teacher's assistant, a driver and a driver's assistant. The bus is equipped with a periscope, microscopes, computer tablets, robot kit, vex protobot, LED television, DVD player, solar panel, and laboratory materials including flasks, test tubes, and balance scales, among others.

Students will be able to perform experiments inside the bus which will tour public schools around Taguig and other parts of Metro Manila.

Computer tablets lent to each student will serve as their guide for the different experiments.

For her part, Mayor Lani Cayetano said the innovative project aims to support and promote science education for students in the elementary and high school levels.

The science laboratory bus including equipment cost about P7 million.

She added that the project is a joint undertaking of Sen. Cayetano, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the Taguig City government.

Mayor Cayetano thanked Sen. Cayetano and the DoST for the interactive science laboratory bus which she said is a "gift" to all students of the city.

She also asked students to take care of the bus and use it properly. (PNA)
