MANILA, Oct. 25 — Malacanang Thursday clarified there is no plan to privatize government hospitals in the country, rather these will be professionalized.

Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda, in a press briefing, said by professionalizing them, they are expected to have "improved services… the ability to sustain (themselves)."

Lacierda also said the government will be expanding the PhilHealth coverage to the poorest sector.

Doctors and employees of government hospitals walked out this morning to protest the reported plan to privatize hospitals.

Lacierda assured government health workers and the public that the Aquino administration is not taking away the "Emergency Room" or depriving the poor of health services.

In fact, he said, "the poorest of the poor are already covered. Kung hindi kayo covered, when you enter the ER of a government hospital, you will be covered. 'Yan po ang pangako ng PhilHealth, and we have the funds to do that." (PNA)
