MANILA, Oct 16 — Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brillantes, Jr. has called for sobriety and calm over two militant groups that figured in a scuffle over party-list accreditation in the 2013 polls.

While he encourages public debate over whether certain party-list organizations represent the marginalized sector, Brillantes said resorting to violence just to get their messages across is out of the line.

"We cannot resort to violence and commit disrespectful and vulgar acts just to make a point," he said in his official Twitter account.

"With this, I call for mutual respect and civility among party-list groups," he added.

Tuesday morning, militant group Anakbayan stormed a press conference of Akbayan party-list to express its opposition to the latter's reelection saying that Akbayan members occupy key posts in government.

It called on the poll body to deny Akbayan's accreditation, along with Black and White Movement which are known allies of the Aquino administration.

Brillantes said cleansing the party-list system is a "very important issue".

The poll body is in the process of purging the list of groups that apparently do not represent the marginalized sector.

"One thing I can assure the Filipino people is that whatever decision the Comelec will arrive at will be fair and will be according to law," he said. (PNA)
