MANILA, July 16 — A Catholic prelate said that the two Catholic priests are safe after their security convoy was attacked by unidentified armed men in Basilan province Monday morning.

Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad said Fathers Elmer Cantular and Julius Boado have returned safely to Tumahubong village in Sumisip town after the incident.

“And so that’s why the priests and their security convoy have to go back to Tumahubong immediately. They are safe and remained there until now,” he said in an article posted on the CBCPNews website.

Reports revealed that the priests were on their way to Zamboanga to attend a renewal of vows for seminarians, when the incident happened.

“Those members of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) conducting road security were like a kilometer away from the priests’ vehicle when the incident happened,” he said.

Jumoad added that no members of paramilitary were hurt in the ambush.

“We agreed to visit the priests tomorrow to also show our moral support to them,” he said. (PNA) RMA/FGP/ssc
