Jan.-June tourist arrivals up 13.05%

MANILA, July 13 –Philippine tourism has recorded a double-digit growth of 13.5 percent with 1,819,781 visitor arrivals from January to May 2012 compared to that of 1,609,651 in the year 2011.

The Department of Tourism's latest statistics revealed that January posted the most number of visitors at 411,064 with the highest increase of 17.54 percent.

Visitor traffic for the five-month period was boosted by the Korean market with a share of 397,170 arrivals with a big jump from the 353,307 last year.

The US accounted for second place by sending in 298,355 compared to the 283,422 in 2011.

Japan is in third after loading a volume of 167,410 to that of the previous year's 156,296 arrivals.

The Chinese market logged in fourth by contributing 138,466 and recording the highest growth of 59.07 percent among the top five countries for the period in comparison to its 87,049 sendoffs a year ago.

Fifth placer Taiwan registered 93,855 arrivals constituting 5.16 percent inbound traffic as this market grew by 35.43 percent.

Other high-yielding markets are Australia (79,020 visitors), Singapore (60,136), Canada (58,868), United Kingdom (50,327) and Hong Kong (48,849).

The high growth markets listed were Russia (12,990) or a growth of 42.18 percent, Germany(30,545) or 14.43 percent growth and Malaysia (41,038) or 12.82 percent growth.

In the ASEAN countries, Singapore sent the biggest number of tourists with 60,136 for the five-month period, followed by Malaysia, 41,038; Thailand 17,519; Indonesia with 14,889 and Vietnam with 8,735. (PNA) CTB/LOR
