CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, May 29 – Local folks as well as legal experts in the province on Tuesday were convinced with the decision of the impeachment court to convict Chief Justice Renato Corona for betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution.

Businessman Ronald Dizon said that Corona’s conviction proved that justice prevails in this country.

“The senator-judges did their work well and I hope that this would serve as lesson to all government officials and employees to be transparent with their assets and liabilities,” Dizon said.

”I salute the senator-judges for the job well done. Their decisions were based on the merits of the case,” Trixie de Leon, a political science student, said.

Rod Villacorta, a jeepney driver said that it was only proper to convict Corona who tried to hide his wealth from the very start of the impeachment proceedings.

This would serve as a warning to corrupt officials and employees of the government, he said.

Attorney Ricardo Sagmit, a Constitutionalist, said the senator-judges had been able to follow the impeachment process under the Constitution and based on their decisions, it was proven that “no one is above the law.”

“Following the conviction of Justice Corona, it was proven that there is fair and equal justice under the law,” Sagmit said.

Judge Omar Viola, executive judge of Angeles City, on the other hand, said they already expected that Justice Corona would be convicted.

They (senator-judges) should abide the rules,” Viola said in dismay.

However, he said they respect the decision of the impeachment court.

”Let’s continue to work for the welfare of the people,” he said. (PNA)
