ILOILO CITY, May 29 -– Aklan Congressman Florencio T. Miraflores said that the impeachment of Chief Justice Reynato Corona is a victory for the Filipino people for it showed that justice still prevails in this country and that nobody is above the law.

In an interview, the congressman said the decision of the senator-judges to impeach Corona for being guilty of violating Article II of the Constitution will serve as guidance for others in public service to practice transparency by properly and truthfully declaring their statements of assets and liabilities and net worth (SALN).

“Chief Justice Corona has been made answerable for his actions,” Miraflores said.

The congressman said what the people have witnessed in the impeachment proceedings showed that the Filipino people are already “maturing” and that their political leaders, the senator-judges, are ready to uphold the Constitution.

“The respondent has also been given chance to participate,” Miraflores said.

Meanwhile, Iloilo Second District Demetriou Sonza said the decision to impeach Corona hopefully could now restore the trust and confidence to the judiciary and to the whole government system that is out to curb corruption.

Sonza, former vice governor of Iloilo province, said that he doesn’t believe the impeachment of Corona would send a “chilling” effect to the judges as they carry out their duties but rather would serve as lesson that government officials and employees should have to be transparent with their dealings including in filing their SALNs.

He said the senator judges did their jobs well and hopes the lawyers of Corona would now respect the decision. (PNA)
