MANILA, May 24 — A fishkill in a ‘tilapia’ fish pen was reported in Barangay Sokol, Calamba in Laguna.

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region IV-A Assistant Regional Director Leah S. Villanueva confirmed the fishkill through a telephone interview with PNA.

Villanueva said that initial report they obtained was that 10 tons of fish were affected by the fishkill.

She said their own team from BFAR and that of the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) already rushed to the area to get water samples from the Bambang river for laboratory testing to determine the cause of the reported fishkill.

Villanueva explained that at this time of the year when rainy season approaches is actually feared to be the time for fishkill as a result of the sudden change in water temperature.

She clarified that in the aftermath of the fishkill in Taal, Batangas last year, BFAR has implemented mitigating measures to offset fishkill.

The BFAR regional official said they advised fish pen owners to harvest before April or May to avoid the fish pestilence. (PNA)
