MANILA, May 17 – Armed Forces of the Philippine (AFP) Western Command chief Lt. Gen Juancho Sabban wants more frigates, reconnaissance planes, and radars so that the country's sovereignty can be fully established and protected.

Western Command cover the entire province of Palawan, the Malampaya offshore drilling platform, and the Philippine-claimed portion of the Spratlys Island Group.

Sabban made this announcement after AFP chief-of-staff Gen. Jessie Dellosa assured him that the Western Command will get priority in the ongoing modernization of the military and asked him specifically what equipment the command needs.

Dellosa visited the Western Command headquarters in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan on Thursday and inspected several of its key facilities.

"He (Dellosa) went here to see for himself to see what Western Command facilities need upgrading and I told him that what we need is equipment that will raise our maritime domain awareness capability like frigates, reconnaissance planes, and surface radars," Sabban said.

Another Hamilton class cutter, the former USS Dallas, is expected to be transferred to the Philippine Navy this coming May 21 or 22.

The former is a sister ship of the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar which is now home-ported at Puerto Princesa and conducting sovereignty patrols off Palawan waters and adjacent areas. (PNA) scs/PFN
