MANILA, May 7 – At the resumption of the impeachment trial of Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato C. Corona on Monday, former Manila Mayor Jose L. Atienza Jr. was grilled by the prosecution lawyers on the purchase of the Basa-Guidote Enterprises Inc. property in Sampaloc, Manila.

Under cross-examination by private prosecutor Renato Samonte, the former Manila mayor told the Senate Impeachment Court that the P34.7-million check for the purchase of the BGEI property in Bustillos was properly done.

Earlier, the lead defense counsel, former SC Associate Justice Serafin Cuevas, told the senator-judges that Atienza's testimony on the sale of the Basa-Guidote property was part of the explanation on how Corona was able to purchase properties.

On the other hand, the prosecutors told the court that they have certified true copy of the P34.7-million check involving the Basa-Guidote property coming from no less than the Commission on Audit (COA).

The prosecution presented both the original and certified copies of the P34.7-million check issued by the city government of Manila to purchase the BGEI property.

Atienza said it was not his function to verify the details of the P34.7-million check, adding that his concern was to have the BGEI property acquired as soon as possible.

He also told the court that he did not make the P34.7-million check, adding it was the city treasurer and the city budget officer who did so.

On the 35th day of the impeachment trial, the defense also conducted a re-direct examination of Atienza and presented the disbursement voucher for the sale of the BGEI property.

Atienza said that the payee was Mrs. Cristina Corona for the BGEI lot.

The defense marked as exhibit the words "Cristina Corona ITF (in-trust-for) Basa-Guidote Inc." in the P34.7-million check from the city government of Manila. (PNA)
