SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, May 4 — At least nine private schools in Region 1 received the green light from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to increase their tuition fees for school year 2012 – 2013.

CHED Region 1 Education supervisor Angelica Dolores confirmed the go-signal given these nine schools to increase their tuition fees but declined to give their names yet.

The nine schools were among 19 private universities and colleges from Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos and Ilocos Norte that applied for tuition fee increase last school Year.

The applications of six others were denied by CHED while the applications of four others are under study.

According to Dolores, the percentage of the tuition hike of these schools would range from five to 30 percent per unit or from P54 to P75.62 per unit.

She cited the declining number of enrollees in private colleges as their main reason for seeking tuition fee hike.

This is because some of their college students transferred to public schools. which charge lower tuition fees and where they intend to finish their respective courses. (PNA) RMA/lvm/Freddie G. Lazaro/1620/rma
