DND to continue observing 'strict tolerance' in maritime standoff

MANILA, April 30 — Department of National Defense (DND) Spokesperson Peter Paul Galvez said on Monday the Philippine government will continue to observe "strict tolerance" in line with its efforts to deescalate the maritime standoff with China over the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal.

However, Galvez said that this does not mean that the ships of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on patrol at Panatag Shoal will just simply give away their ground.

"We will maintain vigilance" despite "bullying tactics" by Chinese maritime surveillance vessels, he added.

Galvez also stressed that the DND, together with the rest of the Philippine government, is hoping that the three-week maritime standoff will be resolved peacefully despite claims by some hawkish elements of China's People's Liberation Army that they are prepared to use military force in securing their claim to Panatag Shoal.

"We are still optimistic that the Department of Foreign Affairs will come out with a fruitful solution," he said. (PNA) scs/PFN
