ILOILO CITY, Mar. 14 – The Sta. Barbara Philippine National Police Station has already filed criminal charges against John Ambot who was arrested for spreading counterfeit money in the province of Iloilo particularly in the municipality of Sta. Barbara.

A native of Alimodian,in the province of Iloilo, Ambot is facing criminal case under the Revised Penal Code for the violation of Article 168 or illegal possession and use of false treasury or bank notes and other instruments of credit before the sala of the Municipal Circuit Trial Court (MCTC) in Sta. Barbara town.

Ambot’s arrest was realized following an entrapment operation on Friday last week jointly made by the intelligence operatives of Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO), Sta. Barbara PNP station and personnel of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) after a concerned citizen tipped off police authorities on the illicit activity of the suspect in distributing fake money bills in villages in Sta. Barbara town.

The suspect was in the act of handing over six pieces counterfeit P200-peso bills to a poseur-buyer in exchange for five pieces P100-peso bill denominations when the police pounced on him.

The 49-year-old suspect had more than P50,000 counterfeit money mostly in P200 and P1,000-peso bill denominations as evidence of counterfeit money recovered from his possession and control consisting of 32 pieces of P1,000-peso bills, 54 pieces of P200-peso bills and 50 more pieces of new P200-peso bill denominations.

IPPO’s chief intelligence section Inspector Jessie Nemias Pamplona said the suspect, when subjected to an intensive interrogation, confessed that the counterfeit money came from a Cebu City-based supplier.

The suspect, however, declined to further elaborate how these fake money finds its way in Iloilo where it is being spread in cockpit arenas and sari-sari stores in the different farming villages in the province of Iloilo that could not easily be detected by unsuspecting residents.

Despite the suspect’s arrest, the PNP authorities here sternly warned Ilonggo residents to be aware on the spread of fake money circulating in the city and province of Iloilo. (PNA)
