MANILA, March 10 – Chief Justice Renato Corona’s defense panel remains tight-lipped about its strategy when his impeachment trial resumes on Monday.

”Next week, you’ll get to see how we’ll go about our defense,” Corona's defense panel spokesperson Tranquil Salvador told the Saturday Forum at Annabel’s in Quezon City.

He declined to identify who the defense’s first witness would be.

”Who to present first is solely the defense’s prerogative — I hope people respect this,” he said.

Neither did Salvador confirm if Corona would take the witness stand.

”There’s no doubt the Chief Justice wants to but he also listens to his defense team,” Salvador said.

Last week, the Senate impeachment court suspended Corona’s trial to give the prosecution and defense time to conclude the process of offering and scrutinizing evidence presented.

Earlier, the prosecution withdrew five of the eight articles of impeachment House solons filed against Corona.

The remaining accusations against the Chief Justice are non-disclosure of his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth; culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust as well as partiality towards former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her husband in allowing them to flee the country so they can escape prosecution.

Mrs. Arroyo appointed Corona to the Supreme Court after serving her in various capacities while in government. (PNA) hbc/CJT/utb
