ILOILO CITY, March 8 — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered the arrest of Magkal group leader Eliseo Mabayag of Badiangan, Iloilo who was lately suspected as the gunman in the foiled assassination of radio blocktimer host Fernando “Kapid” Gabio outside his residence in Barangay Democracia, Jaro, here morning of Friday last week.

Senior Supt. Marietto Valerio, city director of Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), said two witnesses who happened to be Gabio’s nephew and personal security, both pointed to Mabayag as one of the motorcycle-back riding suspects when his picture was presented to them in the rogue’s gallery containing portraits of criminals and suspects purposely for identification.

Valerio said the victim was also able to identify both suspects because they were wearing half-face helmets like the one used by the construction worker.

The director said Mabayag is currently facing a string of criminal charges for theft, frustrated murder with the use of unlicensed firearm, and attempted murder with the use of unlicensed firearm filed in Iloilo City. Other charges pressed against him are murder, robbery, and frustrated murder with the use of unlicensed gun in Iloilo province.

“He is wanted in Iloilo city and the province. We could pick-up him anytime. We already secured five of his warrants of arrest,” Valerio said during a press conference at the Office of the Mayor Wednesday morning.

Valerio said Mabayag is engaged in gun-for-hire and is very capable of killing a person, thus, there is a possibility that somebody backed him to kill Gabio, unless otherwise, Mabayag has a personal grudge with Gabio.

Meanwhile, Valerio said only the arrest of Mabayag will help them find the mastermind on Gabio’s case and know more other existing syndicated groups operating in the city.

Valerio added they could not still establish the real motive of the crime. He said it might be work related because Gabio hosted a blocktime program or it might be a personal grudge.

As to another angle of “shooting me” drama, Valerio said it might be a far reason because there was a shooting incident that happened wounding Gabio on his right thigh.

Earlier, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog denied his involvement in the crime. This was the second time that the mayor’s name was dragged into a crime. The first was on the death of another blocktime host Lito Jimena last year. (PNA) DCT/AJP/MGC/vlo
