MADRID, March 7 — Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo on Tuesday said Madrid has suspended the operation of the Spanish Embassy to Syria.

Garcia-Margallo made the announcement in the Spanish Senate, saying the decision was made in protest of the ongoing violence in Syria.

"What is happening in Syria is unacceptable," said Garcia-Margallo.

He said staff at the Spanish embassy would join the European Union delegation in Damascus, where they would continue to protect the interests of Spanish citizens in the country.
