GUATEMALA CITY, Feb. 29 — Nine people were killed and another three injured in Guatemala on Tuesday after a helicopter of the Guatemalan army crashed in a remote jungle area of northern Peten, the local fire department said.

Those killed were all military officers, while the injured were civilians, it said, adding the helicopter had just participated in rescue work of a crashed commercial airline in the same area.

The Guatemalan army said the accident took place in the municipality of San Luis near the country's northern-most border with Mexico, where the helicopter had disappeared from the radio communication system shortly after taking off.

Cecilio Xacaj, spokesman for the local fire department, said the cause of the accident was not known at this point and authorities expected it would take days, if not weeks, to make it known, due to the isolation of the site– a rainforest.(PNA/Xinhua)
