Truck driver in Pangasinan highway mishap now charged

ROSALES, Pangasinan, Feb. 25 — The driver of an Isuzu forward truck that crashed into seven other vehicles at 1:40 p.m. Friday along the Mac Arthur Highway in Barangay Carmen here and killed four persons and seriously hurt 13 others is now in police custody.

Driver, Alex Cuenco, 40, of Pines Park, La Trinidad, Benguet, was placed under police custody soon after he was charged with the crime of Reckless Imprudence with Multiple Homicide, Multiple Serious Physical Injuries and Damage to Properties.

Cuenco was driving the forward truck (RDJ 780) that was loaded with Baguio vegetables when its brake reportedly malfunctioned after cruising the Gov. Teofilo Sison Bridge in Carmen.

Then the truck plowed three parked motorized tricycles, two motorcycle, one owner-type jeepney and a dump truck before colliding head on with a moving dump truck along the highway.

The incident killed Mary Joy Gotlay, 23 and Ferdinand Ancheta, both of Carmay East, Rosales; Joseph Flores of Balungao; and Rowena Callorena, 19, of San Manuel town.

Seriously hurt were Patrick Laurenzo, 14; Patrick Jasper Laurea, 6 ; Sonia Fe Laurea, 1; Blessie Jasel Vinluan, 14; Virgilio Estabillo, 40; Romano Cabantac, 45; Rabel Sarcia, 27; Mary Grace Laurea, 23; Isagani Laurea, 42; Clarefe Sandaga, 24; Jayson Gallardo, Joselito Pigao, and Rafael Villanueva, helpers of the forward truck.

Chief Insp. Jackson Gatchalian Seguin, officer-in-charge of the Rosales police, said the incident happened in front of the Mc Donald's fast food just south of the Gov. Teofilo Sison Bridge.

P03 Alex Gonzaga, case investigator, said that after ramming the parked motorized tricycles, motorcycles, an owner-type jeepney and a dump truck from behind, the wayward forward truck collided head-on with another moving dump truck loaded with sand and gravel.

The wayward forward truck only stopped when it skidded in front of the Shell Gasoline Station after ramming its cemented ornamental boxes.

Gonzaga said three of the fatalities died on the spot and one in the hospital while undergoing treatment. (PNA)
