Moderate quake hits Gorontalo, Indonesia

JAKARTA, Jan. 16 — An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 struck off Gorontalo province in Indonesia on Monday, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency reported here.

The quake jolted at 15:26 p.m. Jakarta time Friday (4.26 pm in Manila) with epicenter at 69 km southeast of Pahuwato town of Gorontalo and with depth at 147 km, the agency said.

Indonesia is vulnerable to earthquake as it sits on "the Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet that frequently causes seismic and volcanic movement in the country, home to 129 active volcanoes. (PNA/Xinhua)
