Etac’s faces daunting task in URCC fight on Jan. 13

CEBU CITY, Jan. 10 – Yaw-Yan Ardigma stalwart Geronimo Etac faces a daunting task on Friday night, January 13, in the Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) Cebu 7 – “Dominate” as he is up against one of the most talented grapplers in the Visayas region, URCC Visayas pinweight king Victor Torre.

But despite the odds stacked against Etac, who will be having his second URCC fight, his trainer, Yaw-Yan Ardigma head Benigno “Ekin” Caniga, believes that his fighter has his advantages as an MMA fighter, whose base is striking.

”Our target is to stand up to him and try to knock him out. We won’t go to the ground because Torre is a grappler,” Caniga said.

Etac is challenging Torre’s regional crown at the Cebu International Convention Center in the Mandaue City reclamation area.

Although Etac only has a single fight in one of the biggest MMA promotional companies in the Philippines, he has fought locally.

Etac won his only fight in the URCC in 2010, a first round stoppage over Wilfredo Carujao Jr.

”He has shown a good performance in practice but I won’t make a prediction because anything can happen in an MMA fight,” said Caniga.

This fight will give Etac a shot at revenge, because Torre, 5-0 in URCC, defeated his teammate via a first round stoppage.

Two other Yaw-Yan Ardigma fighters, Cebuano kickboxing sensation Renan Noblefranca and Roel Rosauro, are seeing action in the undercard of the seventh URCC Cebu installation.

Noblefranca will face Davao City’s Jonathan Sumugat, while Rosauro is up against Arnel Ylanan of Bullet Fighting System of Mandaue in a rematch. Rosauro beat Ylanan via unanimous decision last year in Yaw-Yan Fighting Challenge 5 at the Cebu Coliseum.

In the main event, Eduard Folayang, one of the best Filipino homegrown talents in MMA, will face Brazilian Muay Thai champion Wadson Teixeira in a super fight.

This is Folayang’s first appearance in Cebu City and also his first in the Philippines since campaigning overseas last year.

Folayang has an impressive 10-1 slate in MMA, while Teixeira is 3-2 in MMA but has a remarkable Muay Thai record of 19-1. He is also a three-time Brazilian Muay Thai champion. (PNA) LAP/LAM/EB/MJT/bh
