DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 3 -– Police arrested Monday evening a suspected usher/collector of the illegal numbers game “swertres” in Barangay Calindagan in Dumaguete City.

An initial police report identified the suspect as a certain Edmundo Du, 51, married of Barangay Calindagan.

Dumaguete police intelligence operatives and members of the Special Operations Group-Provincial Intelligence Branch of the Philippine National Police arrested Du around 7:20 p.m. Monday while allegedly in the act of collecting bets.

Confiscated from Du were tally sheets, betting stubs, ballpen and cash money believed to be proceeds of the illegal numbers game.

Du told reporters he has been acting as an usher in Calindagan for about a year now, usually at the fisheries port in the sub-village of Canday-ong.

He also said he does not have an idea who the financier is but he turns over the proceeds to a certain Gerry Barrera, an alleged coordinator at Cervantes Street, Dumaguete City.

The PNP in Negros Oriental continues to intensify its anti-illegal gambling and anti-illegal drugs operations in 2012 as part of the priority programs of provincial police director, Sr. Supt. Edward Carranza. (PNA) DCT/JFP
