MANILA, Jan. 21 — Former Abra Governor Vicente Valera, was arraigned Friday at the Quezon City Regionl Trial Court (QCRTC) on charges of murdering Abra Congressman Luis Bersamin and his bodyguard, Senior Police Officer 4 Adelfo Ortega in 2006.

Lawyer Rolando Quimbo said the court entered a plea of not guilty for his client as Valera refused to enter a plea because of a petition for certiorari pending in the Court of Appeals.

"Governor Valera did not enter a plea because of his pending petition before the Court of Appeals," the lawyer said.

The former governor, along with several others, is facing murder charges for allegedly masterminding the assassination of Bersamin, a political rival, outside a Quezon City church in December 2006. (PNA) LAM/JCA
