MANILA, Jan. 12 – Around 1,232 poor families in Valenzuela have become the recent beneficiaries of the government's "Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program" (4Ps).

The 4Ps, also known as the conditional cash transfers (CCT), aims to provide a monthly stipend of P500 to destitute families so that they can provide for the health and nutritional needs of their children.

Valenzuela City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) chief Dorothy Evangelista said beneficiary households were personally screened and selected by members of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The DSWD is able to select poor but deserving families for its 4Ps through its National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-PR

Evangelista said each household beneficiary will receive a sum of P6,000 a year or P500 per month intended for health and nutrition expenses.

With a maximum of three children per household, an additional P3,000 for one school year (equivalent to 10 months) or P300 per month per child will also be allotted for educational expenses.

She added the 4Ps will help them get through for five years provided that they comply with the program's strict conditional provisions.

Grantees were bound to spend the financial aid on their childrens' education, food for their family and on regular health check-up at their community health centers.

Evangelista said this undertaking will further enable Valenzuela City to help the country achieve its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set by the United Nations to significantly reduce global poverty by 2015, the time when the 4Ps would have been fully implemented.

Records of CSWDO showed that Barangay Bignay has the most number of beneficiaries with 559, followed by Gen. T de Leon with 412 and Veinte Reales with 261.

With the firm support of President Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" Aquino III, 4Ps is implemented and carefully evaluated in 80 provinces, covering 734 municipalities and 62 key cities with one million household beneficiaries. (PNA)
