MANILA, Jan. 8 — A government trooper died following a clash with communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Mabini town, Compostela Valley on Saturday morning, a military spokesman reported.

Lt. Col. Medel Aguilar, spokesman of the Army’s 10th Infantry Division, said the soldiers from the 81st Infantry Battalion were on a security patrol when they caught up with the rebels at Sitio Cambaratic in Libudon village around 9:15 a.m.

Aguilar said the fighting lasted for about 30 minutes until the undetermined number of insurgents fled.

“One brave soldier was killed-in-action during the encounter,” added Aguilar, who withheld the soldier’s name pending the notification of his family.

Nevertheless, Aguilar said the soldiers thwarted whatever atrocity the rebels were planning to mount in the area.

“The security operations thwarted whatever violent activity that the CTs (communist terrorists) were planning to conduct in the area that will threaten the life of the civilian residents and sabotage their economic activities,” he said. (PNA) LAM/VR
